At approximately 11:51am a fire in a commercial warehouse was reported on the west side of Mansfield, Il. Northern Piatt Co Fire Protection District responded initially with two engines followed quickly by a rescue truck and then apparatus and crews from the neighboring towns of Mahomet (Cornbelt Fire Protection District) and Farmer City Fire Department. The structure had been renovated and additions added several times making control of the fire difficult. Crews from all departments working together were able to located hot spots and bring the blaze under control. The structure appears to have been unoccupied at the time of the fire and all fire crews cleared the scene with no injuries to report.
The State of Illinois has awarded The Northern Piatt Fire Protection District a loan to purchase a new water tender. The new water tender will replace the current water tender that is a 1986 with 3000 gallons of water and no pump. The new water tender will have 3000 gallons of water as well as a pump. With the purchase of this new water tender we will also be retiring our oldest Engine 8652. This Engine is a 1981 Engine with 1100 gallons of water. The new water tender will be able to be used as an Engine if needed allowing us to modernize our fleet of vehicles as well as reducing the number of vehicles we have in our fleet while still meeting the requirements of ISO for needed water flow.
Recently a flyer was sent out by a resident of the fire district regarding a vote coming up for a tax levy to support new ambulance services. Unfortunately, his mailing had a great deal of false information in it and it was designed to look like it was sent out by and endorsed by the fire district. First and for most, the flyer was not produced by or with the endorsement of the district. This material was created by an individual and contains no information provided by the fire district or other supporting agencies. Unfortunately much of the information is false and inflammatory. The corrected information is as follows:
It should also be made clear how a medical call actually progresses. The flyer hints that if you need medical assistance that an ambulance arrives and simply loads you up and takes you to a hospital. That isn't entirely true. Actually EMS personnel (either from the fire department or an ambulance) will typically assess a patient on scene and begin treatment prior to transport. This can include obtaining vital signs, delivering medications, obtaining medical history and information, using cardiac monitoring equipment, establishing IV access, dressing wounds, etc. This is done to assess the patient's illness and stabilize them for transport. Because of the excellent staff at Northern Piatt Co. Fire Protection District, this portion of patient care can be completed prior to the ambulance arrival, so patients can simply be transported with further care en-route to the hospital. This results in excellent patient care and the best possible outcomes given the distance patients must be transported to the hospital.
It needs to be known, the members of the Northern Piatt Co. Fire Protection District provide excellent patient care. The response and care provided by our ambulance service, Pro Ambulance is also second to none. The members of the fire department are not endorsing or condemning the proposed tax levy but simply making an effort to ensure anyone interested in this measure has all of the information needed to make and informed decision.
The Northern Piatt County Fire Protection District has received our 2014 ISO Survey. We were a 6 out of 10 on our last survey in 2003. We have been able to decrease our servey to a 5 out of 10 for 2014. A rating of a 5 may help taxpayers get a lower fire insurance rating. I have contacted many insurance companies and they will not get any rate information for lowering and improving an ISO rating for Fire Service. (The lower the ISO rating the better the Department is. )

The Northern Piatt Firefighters applied for a grant from The Andersons Inc. in mid-2012. We were awarded a matching grant to use for the purpose of purchasing a Cargo Trailer. The cargo trailer will
be used to house specialized equipment as well as disaster equipment. The trailer is scheduled to arrive in mid-December. We hope to have it in service sometime in January 2013.
No District tax monies were used for the purchase of this trailer. The matching portion of the grant was from funds raised by the Firefighters of the District.
The Board of Trustees voted to raise the building rental fee at their January 18th meeting. The building rental fee will increase to $100.00 for residents of the Fire District. Non-Resident fee will increase to $200.00. The building is still free of charge for non-profit organizations.
We received a DNR grant back in September of 2011 for a “Skid Unit”. This is a portable fire pump and tank that will be installed in a pickup truck. The grant was a 50/50 match type grant. We will receive about $8000.00 for the “Skid Unit”.
